How to calculate forex pip value
A pip is 0.0001 on most currency pairs and 0.01 on yen pairs. The money value of a pip starts in the quote currency, the second one in the pair, so a pair quoted in US dollars has a fixed pip value of $10 per standard lot of 100,000 units.
Any other quote currency has to be converted to dollars, which is why this calculator asks for a rate on those pairs. Pip value on USD/JPY or EUR/JPY moves as the USD/JPY rate moves.
Pip value in the quote currency = pip size × units. Divide by USD/JPY, USD/CHF or USD/CAD for those quote currencies, or multiply by GBP/USD for a pair quoted in pounds.
Worked example
One standard lot of EUR/USD is 100,000 euros, and 0.0001 × 100,000 is $10 a pip at any exchange rate.
One standard lot of USD/JPY is worth 0.01 × 100,000, or ¥1,000 a pip. At a rate of 150 that is $6.67 a pip, so a 50 pip move is about $333.
What the result does not account for
- Accounts held in a currency other than US dollars.
- Spreads, swap or rollover charges, and commissions.
- Live rates. The rate shown is an example, so type the current one.
